Days are started to get colder and darker. Leaves falling off trees, as the season’s change and autumn makes way. My desktop wallpaper for September is all about taking chances and welcoming change. One person who knew about taking chances was Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl was not only a writer for a countless number of popular children’s books, he was also an ace fighter pilot, a spy, and a medical inventor. Many of Roald Dahl’s stories were based on his life experiences and challenges that he faced. This is what makes Dahl’s stories so inspiring and magical for both kids and grownups.
As a fan of both books and chocolate, one of my favourite Roald Dahl stories was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl was inspired to write Charlie and the Chocolate factory after his fond memories of testing Cadbury’s chocolate bars while he was in school. A quote that stood out for me in the Charlie and the chocolate factory book was:
“However small the chance might be of striking lucky, the chance was there.”
For those of you who have read Charlie and the chocolate factory, you would know that the story brims with disappointment in the first ten chapters. Charlie Bucket and his family live in a small wooden house at the edge of a great town. They live on boiled potatoes and cabbage each day. Even though they are able to survive every day, they still go to sleep with a horrible empty feeling in their stomach. If it wasn’t for Charlie’s grandpa giving Charlie that one final push to go for that Wonka chocolate bar, after all those previous failed attempts. Charlie would never had meet Willy Wonka and visited the highly acclaimed chocolate factory. All it takes is one opportunity, one chance to change your life! And that’s what Charlie and the Chocolate factory has taught me.
When an opportunity arises that interests me, I make sure I do everything I can to take advantage of this precious moment. After all, I know that opportunities come like a blue moon. That’s almost never! So this month I ask you to take a chance and grab those rare opportunities with both hands and legs! You might regret it later, if you don’t!
Is there any opportunity you failed to take or missed that you wished you took? Or is there anything you are proud of and you are glad that you did it? Share your thoughts or stories in the comments below!
